Hats Off To (Roy) Harper
Now,this is why Led Zeppelin are so great.Folky ,dark sounding songs .This is Led Zep or what?Eh?Immigrant Song starts
off in the typical Led Zep style, with Plant going AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH in his trademark style. He sounds
just right for this band. The standout(the one that screams "Rewind me!Now!Listen again!) track on this album(though there
are many but still this is a sorta highlight) is the epic sounding ,solo infested ,heart wrenching type, bluesy, folksy,AAAAA
type,Since I've Been Loving you,one of my all time favourites(and I mean all time, not the last week or something like
that). What the heck, you have got to listen to believe it.
This is what Led Zep's all about. The unplugged Led Zep. The next song, though not so awesome is still very good and
the last part is simply buttkickin type.Dirty, mean riff ,right there. Then comes the traditional "Gallows Pole".Good
one.And "Tangerine" is beautiful.
Is this a underrated album?Well as you will see the next one is a bane and a blessing.Completely drowns out everything
else.
Well,to end this ,the only song that i don't feel like listening to much is "Hats Off ...".Isn't Roy Harper the guy who
gave vocals on Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar"?

Yeah,yeah,yeah.Untitled.The big one.I really don't know what to say.Oh,now I know.(Don't say "that was pretty quick".There
was a interval of 5 minutes between the full stop and "o").
Listen, this album is not all that flawless that people make it out to be.Everywhere on the net you get rave reviews for
this album.I won't be giving it a rave review just because I want to look critical and all that idiotic stuff. The fact is
if you leave out Misty Mountain Hop and Four Sticks, this gets the A+ and rave review you want. They only have a couple of good
parts. And,the best song when you are in the mood for sad songs is "Stairway to Heaven".There are a lot of great classics
on here ."Black Dog",the aptly named Rock'n'Roll, the monster of a song "When the levee breaks"(which takes on a new meaning
for the citizens of New Orleans, unfortunately). The acoustic stuff is great too.Going To California,The Battle Of Evermore(All
Tolkein lyrics of course) are very sad sounding and good.
And that's all.But I wouldn't advise casual fans to keep their Led Zeppelin vocabulary limited to this album.(discography,i
meant to say)

The sound changes all together ,Led Zeppelin are ready to experiment and that ends up making this album a bundle
of different sounds.I mean look at the Calypso sounding "D'Ye'r Maker" or at the funky(and boring)"Crunge",the epic "No Quarter"(the
best song on here,arguably).
It starts off with the fast "The Song Remains the Same" with not much sounding like they are going to do anything
different other than rocking you out. Then the ballad "Rain Song" comes up,and you start sitting up and taking notice.(extra
hard that is).The next song "Over the hills and far away" sounds like a continuation of the Rain Song."Over the.." gives me
a very good feeling.Reminds me of the green fields that I have seen.Very good work.Excellent ,if I may say so.
The epic"No Quarter" has got a monster riff.Jimmy Page just excels. However the limitations of John Bonham come up to the
surface, who in my opinion was the least versatile member of the band.
Great stuff. The not so good songs include the idiotic "Crunge" and the "Ocean' which i have never liked.Crunge just sounds
silly and the Ocean is uninteresting to me. |
