BLACK SABBATH

This Is frightening!......

All right,If you die laughing then that is frightening.

blacksabb2_03a.jpg

Well Black Sabbath pretty much invented the genre called Heavy Metal .In fact according to me they were, are and will be the best ever Heavy Metal band. That is they were the best till they threw their lead singer Ozzy Osbourne
out of the band. After that they kept changing singers ranging from Rainbow's Ronnie James Dio to Deep Purple's Ian Gillan and Tony(The Riff Master) Iommi replaced everybody but himself and released that thing you call generic Hair Metal crap.Infact Black Sabbath, the real Black Sabbath lasted as long as Ozzy was in it .Once Ozzy was gone the band was doomed. The lyrics were pretty much cartoonish horror movie type and if you listen to what the Ozzman is singing you might start laughing. You will usually find 1 or 2 Ballads per album. In fact there is something called "Fluff" on their 5th album which it is quite literally. This stuff sounds great. And if you don't know anything about Heavy Metal it is recommended to start from here.

3 Behind The Wall Of Sleep
4 N.I.B.

This album was made by them in a 12 hour session!Hell ,they made their albums quickly! This begins with a heavy metal classic Black Sabbath which starts with the sound of fire and bells ,all an attempt to sound scary and they  succeed .Well to come back to the album and that song I was talking about .It is a classic. It starts off slowly but in the end it just rocks.Well even that is an understatement. It has a killer riff damn it!I can't understand how they  thought  about this sound back then.I mean people were used to softer sounds back then.Well ,I suppose so.People here still ain't used to Heavy Metal.

The riffs here are heavy and bluesy(that rhymes!).But the rest of the songs ain't anything too good except for the title track and N.I.B.The Wizard,Evil Woman are tracks that take some getting used to and compared to the later material are not that good.NIB is simply awesome. The way it starts!I love it when Ozzy screams Oh Yeah! The lyrics are idiotic but this is no Bob Dylan we are talking about here. This is Black Sabbath  with Ozzy screaming. The last track is 10 min long with a lot of names and horror stories guitar solos acoustics and all the works.Raw but from today's viewpoint the best heavy metal money can buy.Buy it if you haven't got it.

                                                        PARANOID A

Released: 1970
Genre: Rock / Heavy Metal
Studio/Live?: Studio
Label: Vertigo
1 War Pigs
2 Paranoid
3 Planet Caravan
4 Iron Man
5 Electric Funeral
6 Hand Of Doom
7 Rat Salad
8 Fairies Wear Boots

Black Sabbath's most acclaimed album(seems to be like that) and for good reason. The lyrics are still what I said above but the riffs and songs are much better than the debut but that works in its own way and this works its own way.The best songs are Paranoid,War Pigs,Iron Man.Iron Man is one hell of a dumb song.I got this Ozzy version of the song off the net and found that one better. My personal favourite is Fairies wear boots.Electric Funeral, well the riff is stolen from the Led Zeppelin song Dazed and Confused(Led Zeppelin I).I should have given this stuff A- but i am too soft hearted on them. All the songs except for the eerie ballad Planet Caravan and the instrumental Rat Salad are head bangers.I bang my head regularly. And I am no metalhead.Rat Salad has a drum solo which is ok as far as drum solos go and I like it better than Moby Dick(Led Zeppelin II).Get this stuff. This must have(logically speaking.I wouldn't know, would I?But generally I find that more catchy and simple to understand the song is the more popular it is.) created a wider fan base for Sabbath because its got the cleaner riffs compared to the rest.

Into The Void

Hey! Black Sabbath got religion! This album is heavier by far more yards then Paranoid.Heavier guitar tone.Sweet Leaf, the famous pro-pot anthem I  like. It's the first Sabbath song I ever listened to and it is too slow, too heavy,Ozzy's voice sounds great.Next is the pro-religion After Forever which is ok.After that is a short 20 second instrumental called Embryo. And then ladies and gentlemen comes one of my most favourite butt kicking heavy metal  thrasher Children Of The Grave.I love that song.Thrasher means thrasher and nothing else.Must be done by every high school heavy metal band I would say.And then those bands grow up release LP's by the dozen and call themself Iron Maiden,Judas Priest,Slayer,Primus...... the list goes on.(Metallica are the disciples of the greatest band of all time,Motorhead, aren't they?)

After that comes another instrumental and after that Lord Of This World(how moronic can a sentece be?Not more moronic than that surely?) which is also quite heavy, infact those instrumentals are needed to release the tension. After that comes a ballad called Solitude and yes for those who think it's not Ozzy singing on Solitude it is Ozzy singing. He sounds the most UN-heliumized he ever has.Shows he can do more than sing nasally. After that comes another whopper of a song which talks about leaving earth to Satan and his slaves and finding a new place.

Yessir, one another gloomy, heavy album from the Masters Of Heavy Metal.

Under The Sun

Best Songs-Wheels Of Confusion,Supernaut,Under The Sun

Bad Songs-Changes,FX(I feel very lazy right now.)

Oh yes!The sound is heavy almost as heavy as the oft described "heaviest album ever "Master Of Reality. The first one "Wheels.." is great specially the first few minutes. The power of that riff! But the silly fools didn't proceed with it but gave us one more  power packed headbanger. The last 2 minutes is great(it is called the Straightener and considered the outro to the song.).The riff gets faster.the drumming more frantic,Ozzy does us a favour and shuts up.But he is back on Changes and the song sounds forced.Black Sabbath continuing with their "ease the tension" policy.Ozzy sounds so FLAT!Sample this..

CHHHAAAAAAAANNNNNGGGEEEEEESSSSSSS!

Shut up and get on with it Ozzy!

And then their is that silly idiotic synth produced instrumental that only silly, idiotic people despise.C'mon guys it's so short it hardly matters!Probably they were getting ready to play the next song and writing the next riff and someone wanted  to give them a break and so we got landed with FXXX.

Well the next riff they wrote was one of the most buttkicking headbanging riff they ever produced.Supernauuuuut!Enjoy!Yes the rest are standard Black Sabbath songs with our Blacks doing what they do best except for Laguna Sunrise which sounds so Unsabbathian and pleasant that I was sure that something had gone wrong the first time i listened to this.

There you have it.

In a Metalshell.

                                   Sabbath Bloody Sabbath  B-

Released: 1973
Genre: Rock / Heavy Metal
Studio/Live?: Studio
Label: Vertigo
1 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
2 A National Acrobat
3 Fluff
4 Sabbra Cadabra
5 Killing Yourself To Live
6 Who Are You
7 Looking For Today
8 Spiral Architect

Nope. Not the stuff you would expect from the Sabbaths. They are not heavy on this album and since Ozzy's voice is ill suited for anything but Heavy metal it doesn't work. For example take the title track-it's all right with everything going along nicely with ozzy singing nonsense and Ward drumming and Iommi trying to look like someone else until the 3 minute mark when they change the tempo and Ozzy starts wailing  dismally. It hurts me.They fall flat!Absolutely horrible!A National Acrobat is Ok and the last part is Ok with everyone trying to do something different what with Ward giving the cymbals a bit of exercise and Iommi making his riff sound happier. Then they again try the good old comic relief wheeze with the pleasant sounding "Fluff".Then comes the best song on record"Sabbra Cadabra" with the Sabbaths trying to do things differently. The worst song is "Who are you".Boring.So slow and long.It does get interesting but then reverts back to square one.Killing Yourself To Live is back to the stomping rocker type of songs that Sabbath do so well.

(I raised the rating after sometime. It is better when you get more used to it.In fact much much better.)

 Synths!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Artsiness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thrash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Am I going Insane?(More than I already am,that is).
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all, this thingy was recorded in 1975 and Symptom Of the Universe basically invented or laid down the rules for thrash. The chugga-chugga of the guitars and Ozzy at his best(all the helium is there)and then the acoustic part, which is delightful. This is not the Sabbath, the slow, druggy, heavy, bluesy, dumbed down Sabbath that reached the peak in Master of Reality and Vol.4.This the Expeimental Sabbath ready to discard the notion that Synths are for pussies and artsiness for pricks. The songs are longer than the songs before.
Then there is Megalomania  the long, long song(for Sabbath)which starts off with some great vocals from Ozzy.Check it out for sure,I say.Vintage Sabbath.
The opener sets the tone nicely for what is to come.Great riffing, great soloing,if you want to  know. You should have known that a Sabbath album with a A+ to its name would have great soloing and great riffing, great vocals,Bill Ward is good as usual,so is Butler.Oh yes, this is a great listen. We also have a whole choir and orchestra on Supertzar.Oh yes, " " " "  listen.Check it " " "," say.Vintage ".
Oh, the instrumental(s) .They are there as usual.A track called Blow on a Jug is not listed on my cassete listing, but i checked it out on the net  and it is just Ozzy and Bill Ward fooling around  for 20 seconds.Yessir.Groundbreaking album.

Check it out for sure.

The BEST of BLACK SABBATH  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Ok,sir,I have this thingy on cassete,it is a double album and has 32 tracks(30  if you leave out the 2 instrumentals, one fron Masters, one from Sabotage) and if you buy it on cassete,it will make your pocket lighter by approx 3 $(US dollars) or 150 Indian ruppees. It has a lot of stuff from the first 6 albums and 4 or 5 tracks from the rest of the discography.(Never Say Die,Hard Road,Zero The Hero,Heaven And Hell,Turn Up The Night)All the remaining tracks from the first 6 albums.Apart from leaving out Sabra Cadabara(or whatever the spelling is),Megalomania,After Forever,Hand Of Doom,Supertzar,Wheels Of Confusion they haven't gone wrong anywhere.Get it now,if you have none of the above albums this a damn good bargain.
