So there I was,looking at
the shit albums that the nearest record store keeps and wondering how could they go so low to keep shit like this.I mean ,I
bought Eric Clapton’s latest shit called Back Home and now I was planning to buy Bon Jovi. With a album whose title is
cornier than the corniest.I mean “Have A Nice Day” is an album title ?What the ????????????/////////// ??????????????????????///????????????????????????
Sample some of the Clapton’s
liner notes
“I learned to love blah blah blah ,lots of old time names that I have
never heard of.
I wanted to make music that is safe for people to listen
to and love .I love my blahh blahbalh blah blah blahblah blah lbah mnbljshfj, ndhfijdszy;iodhgku
Thanking you
Eric “The God “Clapton
Now to come to the point
it was when looking at this sort of manufactured crap when I saw a trash box lying on the ground with old cassestes
that I suspected they were getting
rid of that I saw this.
Junoon is a Pakistani band with their roots firmly entrenched
in the old folk tradition. This blows all the INdian PoP shit that was so popular when this came out out of nowhere. It blows
all the DREam Theater ,Led Zeppelin clones that have sprung up out of nowhere in India out of the water. It blows them so far
away that it would take me the hubble telescope to see their last vestiges. All these boy bands like Strings and BAND OF BOYS
and Euphoria and other crap etc suck.Primarily because they rip off Western boy
bands.(Who are bad enough in their own right).
Now this…. is a ROCK BAND .They use tabla in place
of Drums as the percussion instrument except for 1 track. There are solos that kick arse. There is bass. There is a frontman
with a 12 string guitar to boot.There is feeling.There is talent.There is creativity.There is……………..
Now wait a minute
.I got carried away.
The single was “Sayonee” which became a little
popular before fading from the scene .The song is excellent. Now this guy on the lead
..Ali … now he can solo slowly as well as go uptempo. There is this excellent piece on “Sayonee” that
is slow and then suddenly you can imagine the guy going for it.The brain of the three piece band appears to be Salman Ahmed
.He has written all the songs on the album.(Lyrics by some Sabir Zafar).
You know ,the mood is very heavy and sombre throughout
with very subtle changes that don’t strike too much if you are not listening close enough.
Hooks… there are plenty of them.They abound,jumping
out at you at unexpected places. They throw in a traditional song in rock format too,to give the finishing touch.
I don’t know how popular they are right now…
they never became too popular in India at any rate. Now ……. no band popular back in 1997 is popular right now.People
are going in more for generic film music or remixes or rap.All things that I hate, in short.
The album is dedicated to the memory of Ustad Nusrat Fateh
Ali Khan. Now this guy was a master in presenting classical music in a pop format making him popular.
Last word-Highly recommended.
